Hello - can anyone recommend a place to rent a car for our two week trip to New Zealand? I'd like to keep the costs down, if possible. Also, do you need to have a 4-wheel drive to go through certain areas or is a standard automatic car enough?
southwest airlines promotional fares They are located in Christchurch close to the airport. It was the cheapest option southwest airlines promotional fares BUT if you decide to go with this company DO check car brakes. We have been given a car with faulty brakes! We got it exchanged for another one though which was fine. The roads in South Island are great! Be prepared to stop often for picturesque scenery/photo opportunities.
We've rented from most companies in NZ, but APEX is the way we go these days. They rent both new and older model cars. You can save $$$ by renting an older car. Don't be put off by the age, they're all well maintained and in good condition. They've already gone through the bump and bruise phase, which I see as a perk.
I was there last March and rented from Omega car rentals. It is a small operation, and very economical. The car will be a coupleof years old, but that saves big bucks. They will pick you up at airport and deliver you back. My experience with them was without southwest airlines promotional fares any problems.
