Hotel Miramar on Bournemouth's East Cliff has a long-standing history of attracting artists and authors, and indeed was the favourite haunt of author J. R. R. Tolkien who holidayed at the hotel regularly for over thirty years until his death in 1972. To this day a blue commemorative plaque can be seen outside the front entrance of the hotel in memory of his time in the town.
