In the market for a used car, Fox searched midtown cinema online classifieds and spotted the ad for the Chevy Venture on Kijiji. The seller, a Windsor midtown cinema man, was asking $3,500 for the vehicle that had accumulated 119,000 kilometres. He said it belonged to his son, who was selling it because he had lost his job.
With the exception of the air conditioning, the vehicle passed a safety inspection and was in excellent working condition, the seller said. I have seven other people waiting to see this car. It s going to go fast.
Upon further investigation, Fox discovered that the seller lied about the vehicle s original ownership. It did not belong to his son, but to a couple who had sold the van to the seller. She also discovered that the man sells vehicles and car parts from his home a practice called curbsiding.
In Ontario, all dealers and salespersons must be registered with the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council. Unregistered individuals who sell motor vehicles as a matter of business are considered curbsiders, and are breaking the law.
The council, which investigates consumer complaints, estimates 25 per cent of all 'private' midtown cinema classified car advertisements are  placed by curbsiders.  Fox has since reported the seller to the council.
