After months of talks and meetings, hotel owners throughout Mahoning County got the news they were hoping they would never hear. Mahoning County Commissioners voted 2 to 1 on Tuesday to increase the county's bed tax by 2 percent. The tax now will be 5 percent instead of 3 percent. I think we knew what the vote was going to be before. We were here just to support the no tax increase, said Jeff Derose, chief financial officer for Meander Hospitality disney vacation packages Management. The company owns the Hampton Inn in Austintown near Route 46 and Interstate 80. Derose and many other hotel owners believe the tax increase could have a negative effect on their bottom lines. So in other words, there will be imparity, which is the way it should be, said Trumbull County Commissioner Paul Heltzel. Trumbull's bed tax is still set to be reduced to 4 percent, but Heltzel anticipates the commissioners will now revisit their decision to reduce the tax.
