Here's a great way to see Oregon's wine country. Pedal Bike Tours (503-243-2453) leads an easy guided biking and wine tasting tour starting at The Four Graces Winery (9605 N.E. Fox Farm Road, Dundee; 800-245-2950). You'll make about a nine-mile loop tour on flat, less-traveled roads. Back at Four Graces, it's a van ride to other wineries for tasting. Bike, helmet, water and snacks are provided; tasting fees on your own. Other tour options are available.
You do not want to land in a "pot bunker" (golf hazard) if at all possible, unless it's the pub in the Gearhart Hotel (1157 N. Marion Ave., Gearhart; 503-717-8159). The Pot Bunker and the Sand Trap Pub are part of yet another McMenamin adventure at one of their latest overnight and entertainment facilities. (Among other things, McMenamins' properties are recognized by their signature fun artwork.) Eighteen serviced apartments milton brisbane guest rooms are housed in the Cape Cod-style hotel, each with private bath. Golfers have long played the historic 18-hole Gearhart Golf Links, also part of the compound.
This historic complex has waxed and waned for more than 100 years (held to avoid bankruptcy by Meier Frank in the mid-20th century; where your columnist was hired for -- and fired from --his first job). With the McMenamins team and Columbia Sportswear entrepreneur serviced apartments milton brisbane Tim Boyle backing the most recent reincarnation, the Gearhart Hotel has returned to good health once again.
Cross the Columbia River at Astoria for a fine-dining evening at Pelicano (177 Howerton Way S.E., Ilwaco, Wash.; 360-642-4034) on the Port of Ilwaco serviced apartments milton brisbane waterfront. Given the port and coastal setting, you can bet on a heavy emphasis on seafood in the changing menu; pastas, beef and chicken aren't left out, though. The intimate dining room is open Wednesday through Monday (summer) from 5 p.m.
