Officials from MnDOT and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation discount travel planning announced Tuesday that the national architectural and engineering firm HDR has been tapped to design the new bridge that will span the St. Croix River south of Stillwater. The firm, along with its partner Buckland & Taylor discount travel planning of Seattle, was awarded the $14.2 million contract.
Extradosed bridges, which have been built in Japan and Europe for several discount travel planning years, minimize environmental impacts by keeping tower heights below the river bluffs and minimizing the number of piers in the river, Western said.
The extradosed bridge design is similar to a cable-stayed bridge in its use of towers and external cables to Advertisement support discount travel planning the bridge deck, Western said. The bridge is different than a cable-stayed bridge, however, in its reliance on shorter towers and shallow cable angles.
HDR, which has an office in Minneapolis, served as peer reviewer for the Lafayette Bridge/Minnesota Highway 52 project in St. Paul. The company also is designing the Cayuga project in St. Paul, which will reconstruct Interstate 35E from University Avenue to Maryland Avenue, including replacement of the Cayuga Bridge, the Pennsylvania Avenue Bridge and the railroad bridges along I-35E.
The design work will take about a year to complete; construction of the bridge is slated to start in the fall of 2013 and finish in 2016. The new span, which will run between Oak Park Heights and St. Joseph Township, Wis., will divert traffic off the aging Stillwater Lift Bridge.
