Lars Eric Lindblad, whom many admire as the father of eco-tourism, set out to discover unknown places and to share the unique cultural and environmental aspects of these places with others.  His 1950 s expeditions focused of creating experiences that foster an understanding and appreciation of the most remote and pristine places on the globe. Lindblad operated ryan international airlines their first small ship cruise in Alaska in the summer of 1982.  These first cruises were true exploratory expeditions.  At that time southeast Alaska was the domain of commercial fishermen and only the occasional big ship cruise. The Sea Bird and Sea Lion joined the Lindblad fleet in 1989-1990 and Lindblad Expeditions joined ryan international airlines forces with National Geographic in 2004.
The modern era of Alaska Cruising, that Lindblad helped usher in, was preceded by a long history of Alaska Cruising.  In fact small ships have been plying the Inside Passage since railroad magnate Edward Harriman led a famous expedition in 1899 with an elite selection of leading scientists, artists, naturalists and photographers.  It seems fitting that this first Alaska ryan international airlines small ship cruise was led by John Muir, the
naturalist, conservationist and explorer credited with the rediscovery ryan international airlines of Glacier Bay, Alaska.  Lindblad founded his cruises in much the same spirit as Harriman employing today s top naturalists, authors, professors, photographers and scientists aboard Lindblad small ships.
Lindblad s pioneering expeditions in Alaska were among a long string of firsts in the expedition travel industry.  In 1966 Lindblad ryan international airlines led the first expeditions to Antarctica, ryan international airlines in 1967 the first to Galapagos, in 1972 Lindblad takes travelers to the Arctic and Amazon.  In 1979, Sven-Olaf  Lindblad, son of founder Lars, founded Special Expeditions as a division of Lindblad Travel, enabling ryan international airlines the company to further its mission of offering innovative and educational travel expeditions that were primarily marine focused.
Today Lindblad Expeditions operates two Alaska itineraries Exploring Alaska s Coastal Wilderness (8 Days from Juneau to Juneau) and Alaska, British Columbia, and the San Juan Islands (12 Days from Seattle to Juneau or reverse).  These cruises are operated aboard the 62 guest National Geographic Sea Bird and Sea Lion .  While the itineraries have remained largely unchanged for many years, each voyage is truly unique.  With thirty years of experience Captains and expedition leaders are adept at finding ryan international airlines whales and wildlife.  Their experience is unsurpassed in Alaska cruising  and has provided travelers  extraordinary wildlife encounters and Alaska cruises every summer for the past 30 years.  This summer will be no different.  Encounter authentic Alaska with Lindbald Expeditions and help celebrate 30 years of Alaska expedition cruising.
