Cally Houck has joined Boxer in this public awareness campaign to exert pressure on the rental car c

The flaming accident took the life of the two sisters from Santa Cruz, who were killed when the car they rented caught fire before crashing into a truck on a California highway. Rachel and Jacquie Houck were 20 and 24, respectively. Eight years after the 2004 accident, their mother, Cally Houck, still grieves their loss.
What makes the fatal accident even harder to accept is that the vehicle the sisters had rented from Enterprise was under recall for an auto defect . As noted in our May 10 blog post, a jury has already determined that Enterprise rented the vehicle despite failing to repair a power steering fluid leak that lead to the accident.
Congress has still not passed the bill. But one of its sponsors, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif, continues to pressure the four major rental car companies to make a voluntary pledge to not rent or sell any vehicles that have been recalled due to a defect - until the defect has been fixed.
Cally Houck has joined Boxer in this public awareness campaign to exert pressure on the rental car companies. One company, Hertz, has already announced it will comply and pledge not to rent or sell unrepaired cars that are the subject of a safety recall.
